How Tattoo Prices Are Set: 7 Factors That Matter

One tattoo, one story about its price.
When you see a studio's “starting from” price, it is easy to wonder why one small piece costs a lot while a bigger one looks like better value. The truth is that a tattoo price is never about size alone. There is a lot more going on behind the number.
1. Size and placement
Bigger means longer, and longer means a higher price. Placement matters too. Ribs, ankles and the back of the neck often cost a little more, because they need extra precision and the artist has to work in an awkward position.
2. Detail and complexity
Lots of line work, dense shading and fine detail all add hours, and the price follows the hours. A minimal design can cost less, but minimal never means easy. On some pieces one wrong line ruins the whole thing.
3. The artist's reputation and experience
An artist with a professional portfolio or a signature style will always charge more. You are not only paying for a design, you are paying for skill and for the confidence that it will come out beautiful.
4. Colour and materials
Black and grey usually costs less than colour, because colour needs more shades of ink and more time. Studios that use high quality, skin safe supplies also price a little higher, and that is still better than risking a reaction or ink that fades in a few months.
5. Working time
Some studios charge by the hour, often ฿1,000–3,000 an hour depending on the artist. Others price by the piece. If a design is small but packed with detail, the price can still be high.
6. Custom design
If you want a piece drawn for you and nobody else, the price includes the thinking, the sketching and the reworking. That can take several hours before the needle ever touches skin.
7. Aftercare
Some studios include aftercare, such as a protective film, healing cream or a free touch up. All of that sits inside the total price.
In short: a “good tattoo” is never the cheap one.
A tattoo is art you hand to your body for life. What you pay for is care and craft, not just ink and a machine. Do not be tempted by a low price that you have to fix later, because a good tattoo does not have to be the most expensive one, it has to be the one that is most worth it for you.
