The client walked in with a phrase saved on a phone: "she's chic without trying". No flower this time, no little cat. Just one short line of thin cursive, meant to sit quietly along the waistline like a note written in a diary.

Lettering is one of the most requested small tattoos at our studio, and one of the easiest to get wrong. So here is the story of this piece, plus everything we check before putting a fine line lettering tattoo on skin: size, spacing, placement and how much it actually hurts. 🌿

One phrase, one thin line

A script tattoo is really two portraits in one. It is the meaning of the words, and it is the handwriting itself. For this piece we kept the lettering small and slightly slanted, so the phrase reads like a whisper rather than a statement. The cursive is light, with a tiny flick on the last letter, and it follows the soft line of the waist instead of fighting it.

The session itself was a calm one. Blinds down, the red lamp on, music low. The client settled on the bed and scrolled a phone with the free hand while we worked under the warm light. Honestly, this is our favourite kind of afternoon at the studio: one small piece, no rush, everything quiet.

Why tiny lettering is its own craft

Here is the part most people never see. Every letter in a piece like this is only a few millimetres tall, and ink softens a little in the skin over the years. If the letters are too small or packed too tight, a delicate phrase slowly turns into one fuzzy line. So we size lettering with the future in mind: enough height to stay readable, enough space between letters to let each one breathe, and one steady pass instead of reworking the same stroke.

Before the needle ever touched skin, the phrase was sized on the tablet and the placement tested more than once. A script along the waist has to follow the body's natural curve, so we adjusted the angle in small steps, checked it standing and lying down, and only started when the line looked right from every side.

Bring the exact spelling and read it twice. On skin there is no autocorrect.
Keep small script readable. If it already looks tight on paper, it will blur on skin.
Give the letters room to breathe instead of squeezing a long phrase into a short space.
Think about friction. Waistbands and straps are not kind to fresh lettering.
Simple cursive ages best. Heavy flourishes are the first details to soften.

Placement: along the waistline

This spot is a quiet favourite for script. The words follow the natural line of the body, stay hidden under everyday clothes, and appear only when you want them to. The inking itself is slow and almost meditative. Tiny strokes, the machine barely travelling, one letter appearing at a time under the lamp. Needle time for a piece this size is short, usually well under an hour from stencil to the final wipe.

Does a waistline tattoo hurt?

Honest answer: more than a forearm, less than the horror stories. The area sits close to the ribs, so some strokes buzz more than others, but small lettering is quick, and the client handled it with zero drama, chatting with us minutes after the last line. Breathe slowly, come rested and fed, and it is very doable.
