A Wave and the Thai Word for Freedom

This is a new design drawn by the studio: a fine line ocean wave, two small sparkles, and the Thai word อิสระ sitting just above the crest. 🌊

It was chosen by a visitor from overseas who came by while they were in Bangkok. Thank you for trusting us with it.

The word in this design

อิสระ means freedom, in the sense of being unbound. It is pronounced roughly it-sa-ra and written itsara in the Latin alphabet. It is an everyday word that Thai people actually use, not an archaic or religious term.

We wrote the letters smaller and lighter than the wave on purpose, so the word can be read without competing for attention. From across a room you see a wave first, and the word arrives a moment later. That order is the part we like.

Why a wave

A wave suits this particular word almost too well. It is always moving and it never repeats the same shape twice.

The other reason is practical. A wave does not need much detail. A few lines placed with the right rhythm and it already reads, which lets the piece sit quietly on the skin instead of announcing itself.

Thinking about Thai script

We get asked about Thai word tattoos more and more. The first thing worth saying: always check the meaning with someone who actually speaks Thai. App translations often give a word that is technically correct in a dictionary and strange in real life.

The second is about the shape of the letters. Thai vowels and tone marks sit above and below the line. Those marks are not decoration, they are part of the word. Remove one or place it wrong and the meaning changes, or the word stops reading at all. That is why we write the word out and show it to you before any needle touches skin.

What fine line at this size means

Fine line at a small size has limits worth knowing. Over the years, lines on skin spread a little. That is simply what skin does. If letters are very small and packed tightly, the gaps between strokes slowly close up. So we leave more space between the strokes than your eye thinks is necessary.
