Pet Portrait Tattoo: Malee the Calico Cat

Meet Malee: a calico cat with orange, grey and white patches, caught mid lick with one paw raised. This week Malee moved onto a client's thigh as a little colour tattoo, surrounded by red, orange and pale blue stars.

Pet portraits are one of our favourite requests. Here is how Malee went from a design card to skin, and what we look for whenever we draw someone's cat. 🐾

Designing Malee

A pet portrait has to look like that exact animal, not just any cat. For a calico, the patches are the fingerprint, so we kept the orange and grey exactly where they belong. Then we simplified everything else into soft naive lines, wrote the name under the paws and scattered stars around for a bit of magic.

The finished design was printed as a card and clipped right next to the inks during the session, so every patch could be checked while we worked.

From stencil to skin

Next to the card sat the stencil version: the same cat reduced to clean outlines, ready to transfer onto skin. Outline first, then colour.

Colour pet tattoos follow a few rules we always keep:

• Send clear photos where the pattern is visible. Markings matter more than the pose.
• Keep the markings, simplify the fur. Too much fur texture turns muddy at small sizes.
• Pick colours that match your pet and still read well on your skin tone.
• Leave some space around the animal for stars, flowers or a name.
• Write the name in simple letters so it stays readable for years.

A relaxed session in the studio

Small colour pieces are calm work. The client relaxed on the bed while we chatted about Malee, and the time went quickly.

Colour, patch by patch

Colour goes in patch by patch: the orange markings, the grey tabby stripes on the tail, a touch of pink inside the ears and nose, and soft pale blue for the shadows on the white fur.

Fresh colour always looks a little bright and the skin a little pink; both settle within the first week or two. Colour tattoos stay vivid longer with good sun care, which in Bangkok matters a lot. See our guide to tattoo aftercare in Thailand heat.
