Christmas Tattoo Ideas: A Little Gift to Yourself

It is still thirty-something degrees outside our studio, and yet every year around October the first snowmen start showing up in our DMs. Someone wants a small Christmas tattoo before flying home, someone wants to mark the end of a long year, someone simply loves December more than any other month. 🎄

So this is our winter guide, written early on purpose: the Christmas tattoo ideas people ask for most, the three winter flash designs waiting in our catalogue right now, and why a tiny festive piece might be the nicest present you give yourself this year.

Why a Christmas tattoo works, even in Bangkok

A seasonal tattoo does not need the season to make sense. What people really want to carry is the feeling: warm lights, the end of the year, the people you love, a present with your name on it. That feeling travels through all twelve months, and honestly, a little snow on your arm in a Bangkok April is a joke that never gets old.

The naive style suits winter the same way it suits Halloween. Christmas is already made of simple shapes: a round snowman, a pointy hat with a pompom, a square box with a bow. Draw them soft and slightly wobbly, add a few bright colours, and they read as cute characters rather than decorations that have to come down in January.

Small Christmas tattoo ideas people keep asking for

Most winter requests are small, somewhere between a coin and a matchbox. These are the ideas that come up again and again, and every one of them works as a fine-line piece with two or three colours.

• A pet in a Santa hat. By far the favourite. Your own cat or dog, drawn from photos, wearing a tiny red hat. A pet portrait and a Christmas card in one.
• A snowman. Round, a little lopsided, carrot nose, knitted beanie. Snowmen forgive everything, which makes them perfect for a first tattoo.
• A wrapped present. A small box with a bow, maybe with a date or an initial on the tag. Simple, and it can mean whatever you want.
• Winter flowers. Poinsettia is the Christmas flower, with holly and mistletoe close behind. Drawn naive style, a single sprig sits beautifully on a wrist or an ankle.
• Snowflakes and little stars. Scattered around a bigger design, or on their own behind an ear. A handful of pale blue sparkles says winter without a word.

Our three Christmas flash designs

• Christmas cat with gifts. A soft brown cat in a Santa hat, standing next to a little pile of presents in red, blue and pink.
• Christmas dog in a Santa outfit. A golden pup in a red coat with fluffy white trim, trotting somewhere very important.
• Snowman. A relaxed snowman leaning back in a pink knitted hat, with pale blue sparkles all around.

Small changes are welcome, a different colour of hat, for example. And if you love the costume but want your own pet inside it, that works too. A tattoo as a Christmas gift to yourself

Presents get used up, put away or forgotten by February. A small tattoo is one of the few gifts that stays exactly where you put it. We see it every December: people who spent the whole year looking after everyone else finally book something just for themselves, and walk out a little lighter.

If it helps, think about it the way you would think about any gift. Who is it for? What did this year teach you? A snowman for the year you finally slowed down. Your cat in a Santa hat because they got you through it. A present box with a date that only you understand. The drawing can stay cute while the meaning is entirely yours.

Placement, size and colour

Winter characters love the same spots as small flowers: the inner forearm, the inner arm above the elbow, the ankle, the back of the upper arm. For size, most of these ideas sit happily between 3 and 6 centimetres, big enough for a face and a pompom to stay clear as the tattoo settles over the years. Christmas is a colour story: Santa red, pine green, snow blue, a touch of gold. Colour needs a little more care than black, not much. Keep the new tattoo out of the sun while it heals, follow the aftercare your artist gives you, and once it has healed, wear sunscreen on it whenever it sees daylight. If anything looks wrong while it heals, ask a doctor rather than the internet.
