A parent and a grown-up kid who finally agreed on something. The question is nearly always the same: can we match without turning into a copy of each other?

Yes, and the smaller and simpler the piece, the better it usually works. A matching tattoo does not have to be identical, and it does not have to be big. Here are the five ways we match people at the studio, a true story about a red and white clover, and a few practical things to know before the two of you walk in. 🌷

Five kinds of matching tattoo

Matching is a spectrum. At one end sit two identical tattoos; at the other, two pieces that only make sense side by side. Most of our pairs land somewhere in the middle, and these are the five we come back to most often:

• Same design, different colour. One drawing, two inks. The picture is the part you share, the colour stays personal. Perfect for two people who want to match without pretending to be the same person.
• A mirrored pair. The same motif flipped, so the two tattoos face each other when you stand side by side. Two cats looking at each other, two tulips leaning in.
• Same set, different character. Two drawings from one small world: a pug and a dalmatian both in party hats, or two kittens each hiding behind a tulip. Clearly a pair, and nobody has to decide who gets the original.
• Two halves of one picture. A stem on one wrist and its flower on the other, a teacup and its saucer, a cat and the yarn that rolled away. Apart, each half is a small complete object. Together, they finish the sentence.
• One small word, the same word. A date, a nickname, the punchline of a joke only the two of you get. Kept to a few letters it fits almost anywhere, and it never shouts.

A true story from the studio: the red and white clover

The clover on the cover came in as a duo. Two people, one drawing, a four-leaf clover in flowing brush lines, and one decision that made the whole thing sing: one person chose red ink, the other chose white. The leaf means the same four things for both of them, hope, faith, love and luck, while the colour says something about each of them. Red wears its luck in plain sight; white settles almost flush with the skin, a charm you have to lean in to see. That pair also shows the quiet rule we care about most. A good matching tattoo should be lovely on its own. Not everyone stays in each other's lives forever, and even those who do are not standing next to each other every day. So we draw each half as a complete little picture that you would happily wear alone. The match is a bonus you carry, never a caption you depend on.

The practical side: same day, same artist, same size

If you want the two tattoos to read as a pair for years, a few simple things help. Same artist is automatic here, there is only one of us. Same day is the part you choose: book both in one visit, so the pieces are drawn and tattooed by the same hand in the same mood, with the same inks. Choose placements that echo each other, the same inner arm or ankle, or true mirrors, left wrist and right wrist. Keep the size identical, to the millimetre; matching pieces drift apart fastest when one is quietly bigger. And decide on purpose whether the colours match or differ. Both are lovely, but make it a choice, not an accident on the day.
